da dobrowin: According to The Mirror, Aston Villa want to re-sign Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan, but the Championship club should instead look to bring in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay at the start of 2019.
What’s the story?
The Mirror has claimed that Villa boss Dean Smith wants to bring Bannan back to Villa Park in an £8m deal in the January transfer window.
However, the Championship outfit should drop their interest in the Scot to pursue a loan deal for Man United midfielder McTominay.
McTominay has made four appearances for United this term, although his form has been criticised.
The 21-year-old has actually been played at centre-back on two separate occasions this term, but he has missed United’s last two Premier League games through injury.
There is a general feeling that United would be prepared to allow the midfielder to leave on loan next year, and Villa would be the perfect club for him to develop.
Why should Villa make a move?
McTominay certainly benefitted from injuries to Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini last season, and he looked at home in each of his four Champions League appearances, which is some going for a player of limited experience.
The 6ft 4in ace has had a tough time in recent weeks, but there is no question that he is capable of making a huge difference to a Championship club.
Villa still have ambitions of challenging for promotion this season, despite a disappointing start leaving them down in 17th position in the table.
Smith’s team are only seven points off the top six, and the January arrival of McTominay – valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt – would send out a huge message to the rest of the division.
Mourinho might take some convincing due to his fondness of McTominay, but a loan move to Villa Park makes sense for all involved.
